Dose is my go-to coffeehouse, not only because it’s a “clean well-lighted place” but also because they don’t mess around with their goods. Some all-time favorites for me (and I don’t take this category lightly) are the blueberry bran muffin (best in the world, seriously), the rosemary and parmesan biscuit, the cortado, and the Cascara tea (made from the fruit of the coffee plant). At lunch time, I go for the smallish, under-$5 side options. Killer quinoa salad. Love it!
Do you have 3 minutes? That’s all it takes to get a kolache and coffee, have a lovely interchange with Bill, and get to work on time. Yeast Nashville is the Nashville’s only place to grab this Texas breakfast staple. Usually a sweet dough usually filled with fruit or cream, Bill and Sara offer a savory version with sausage and cheese. There’s also a constantly rotating and wildly creative menu of kolaches and other baked goods, including my namesake, Rooster Bread—made with sriracha, of course.

If you have one day to spend in Nashville, spend the whole damn thing at Pinewood Social. Here’s your itinerary. Breakfast: eggs in a jar + a Southern Limerick (you’re spending all day here, so start drinking now) in the lounge area. Lunch: Beef Tongue Reuben + Fried Broccoli + Everything Subject to Change (don’t you just love the drink names?) by the pool & bocce (bout time for some exercise). Dinner: ½ Fried Chicken + Hot Sweetbreads in a booth with 7 of your cohort. Post dinner: bowling—it helps with digestion. Close the night with a pitcher in a private karaoke booth.
